Hiking and Snowshoeing

A Special Note About Sign Ups For Hikes and Snowshoeing Outings
While not required, advance notice to the Hiking and Snowshoeing coordinator(s) is recommended—you’ll get the details about departure time, the availability of carpooling for those who choose to carpool, and directions to the trailhead.

Tips And Other Information: (See other tips at the end of this section)

  • Bring plenty of water for the trail—about 10 oz. for each hour of hiking
  • Bring a lunch—we usually eat lunch at the summit
  • Refuel after the hike by having dinner with other TCSC hikers and snowshoers at a restaurant on the way home.  (Remember to bring money for dinner.)
  • If the weather looks questionable, contact the Hiking and/or Snowshoeing coordinator(s).

Triple Cities Ski Club Hiking and Snowshoeing Schedule

    2008

    January 6, 2008 - CV State Park Hike/Ski, T. Fenton

February 23, 2008 - Moonlight Hike/Ski, Ely Park, Mount Prospect

May 16 - 18, 2008 - Hiking/ Backpacking Trip to Mt Greylock in the Berkshires of Massachusetts - Contact Chris Mencel or Ron Brink ... Read more ...

June 21st Hudson Valley Mansions – Olana and Clermont. We will walk the grounds of these two beautiful Nineteenth Century mansions on trails and old carriage roads. Views of the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains are spectacular. Seven miles total mileage. It may be possible to tour the interiors of the mansions if the group wishes and space is available.

July 18th – July 20th - Adirondack Backpacking weekend – McNaughton. Leave for the mountain Friday evening, stay at an inexpensive lodging place, hike in Saturday to Wallface Ponds, set up camp. The bushwhack climb can be done on Saturday or Sunday, depending upon weather and other factors. Hike out Sunday afternoon and drive home. This is a remote and beautiful area little visited by people. Total mileage for the weekend – about 15.

August 7th – August 10th Adirondack Backpacking long weekend – Johns Brook Lodge. Backpack 3.5 miles in to the JBL and camp out or stay inside, depending upon the availability of bunk space. Inside folks have three meals provided per day by the Lodge and running water. Many wonderful hikes at a variety of difficulty levels are possible from this location. Contact the trip leader ASAP for details if interested; the Lodge fills up quickly.

September 13th Ice Caves – Shawangunk Mountains. A ten-mile loop hike with nice views of the Hudson Valley, waterfalls, gorges, dwarf forests and the Caves themselves. A nature Conservancy site and a hikers paradise!

October 12th - Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania – West Rim Trail. This 7.5 mile hike has excellent views of the Pine Creek Gorge and surrounding mountains. Fall colors should be at their peak.

November 1st - Western Catskill Hike – Touch-Me-Not and Cabot Mountains. A 5.5 mile partial loop hike over the mountain summits and around Little Pond. Nice views through the trees can be expected in this remote Wild Forest area.

    Snow in the Catskills -
For those intending to go on the Western Catskills hike on Saturday 11/1
(tomorrow), there may still be significant snow at elevation on the
mountains. If you have it, I suggest bringing traction gear such as
snowshoes, stabilicers or yaktrax. Trekking poles would be helpful to
maintain balance, as would gaiters to keep the snow out of your boots.
People who lack these things should bring boots with a decent tread. If
the snow is gone or substantially reduced tomorrow, we can always leave
the extra things in the cars. Call Ron Brink with questions 237-5290.

November 29th – Chenango Valley State Park. A 5-mile walk on rolling trails. A good chance to work off some Thanksgiving turkey in this pretty part of the river valley.

December 13th – Moonlight Hike – Ely Park. Come check out the city lights from this great vantage point far above the North Side. A three-mile after-dark loop on rolling terrain. Bring a flashlight. Dinner afterwards at a local restaurant. Call the trip leader if the weather looks bad.

In all cases, participants should check with the trip leader for details on the departure point, time of departure, the level of difficulty for each hike and suggestions on what to bring. Participants should be in reasonable physical shape. If the weather looks questionable, contact the trip leader the day before a hike to see if it will be postponed or not. See the TCSC Web site or newsletter for basic hiking suggestions and other “rules of the road”.

Notes: Trips are by carpooling as much as possible.  Call the trip leader (Ron Brink in most cases, whose number is listed in the SNOWPLOW newsletter) for the location of the gathering point and the time of departure.  Call Ron if the weather forecast looks questionable for the day of a hike.  Hikers should be in reasonable physical shape and be properly equipped.  Call Ron for equipment suggestions and for more details on the difficulty levels of individual hikes.   Hikers who are not dressed appropriately for safety, are not properly equipped or do not have adequate experience may be turned away from the day’s hike at the hike leader’s discretion.  Hiking involves certain inherent hazards, and persons participating do so at their own risk.

    Meeting Place:
Call Ron Brink at the number is listed in the SNOWPLOW newsletter.
Transportation is by carpooling.  Be sure to bring money for dinner after the hike.

    Hiking Gear:
Hikers should have sturdy boots, since trails can sometimes have rocks, tree roots and mud.  Day hikers should bring a lunch to eat on the trail, snacks and lots of water.  Mountain summits can be cooler and windier than surrounding valleys, so a jacket is a good thing to bring along, especially during the spring and fall seasons when the weather is more changeable.  Other useful equipment includes a flashlight and/or headlight, whistle and emergency poncho or “space blanket”.  Contact the trip leader if weather conditions on the day of the hike look questionable or if you would like more information on the hike itself (expected trail conditions, degree of difficulty, what to bring, etc.). Weekend hikes require motel reservations; contact the trip leader for more details.

    Feb 21 - Feb 28 - TCSC's 2009 Western Trip
    Breckenridge, Colorado!

Cost =$1,596 (if locked-in before any price changes)
Includes airfare from BGM, charter bus from/to Denver airport, ski-in / ski-out accommodations and 5 day lift ticket good at five resorts!
(Subtract $255 for no lift tickets)

TCSC will take part, for the first time, in a Western Trip organized by our ski council, (NJSC.)  TCSC members will stay together in two slope-side, ski-in / ski-out condos currently reserved for TCSC in the Village at Breckenridge.  Downhill skiers will have a 5-day lift ticket for Breckenridge, Keystone, Vail, Beaver Creek and Arapahoe Basin.  Lodging, Flights out of the Binghamton Regional Airport (BGM) and ground transportation from Denver airport have already been arranged for us by our ski council's travel agent.  The end result is a trip very much like our traditional TCSC western trips but much easier for the TCSC trip coordinator.  In addition, we have the option to take part in parties, slope-side picnics and a banquet offered by the council.  For Nordic skiers, there are ample opportunities for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.  Council trip coordinators Susan Donlan and Dennis Young are pleased that TCSC is taking part in this trip and they are working hard to accommodate our travel and lodging needs.  Trip insurance is available through NJSC.  Please contact Tim Hanna for more information.  tim_hanna (at) juno (dot) com or 656-7680.
